Beyond Meat Launches “Beyond Green” Earth Day Initiative:

Investing in the Future of Artificial Photosynthesis

 

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. – April 17, 2024 – In an effort to propel forward-thinking environmental solutions, Beyond Meat, a global leader in plant-based protein, announced its newest Earth Day 2024 initiative today titled “Beyond Green.” Going above and beyond their signature plant-based products, the company pledges 1% of their profit to spearheading research on artificial leaves, a revolutionary technology with the potential to drive substantial environmental benefits.

 

Artificial leaves mimic the process of natural photosynthesis, capturing carbon dioxide and sunlight to produce oxygen and energy. Artificial leaves use a silicon chip covered with special chemicals to speed up a reaction that splits water into hydrogen and and oxygen when sunlight shines on it, similar to how real leaves work. This process captures the particles needed to make hydrogen gas, which can be turned directly in electricity. Due to the fact that sunlight and water are everywhere, artificial leaves can make hydrogen an endless source of energy. At large, this technology could significantly reduce the carbon footprint of various industries and help reverse the adverse effects of climate change.

 

Here are some key points under the “Beyond Green” initiative:

  • Green Grants: Allocation of funds to leading scientific institutions and startups specializing in artificial photosynthesis. The goal is to stimulate groundbreaking research and accelerate the development and deployment of artificial leaves in real-world applications.

  • Educate to Innovate: Beyond Meat will initiate a global awareness campaign that emphasizes the significance of artificial photosynthesis. This includes collaboration with educational institutions to incorporate the importance of sustainable technological advancements in the curriculum.

  • Sustainability Conference: Hosting a series of webinars and panel discussions featuring experts in the field of artificial photosynthesis, discussing the technology’s potentials and challenges.

  • Innovators’ Showcase: An annual competition encouraging young scientists and researchers to present their advancements in artificial leaf technology, with rewards and mentorship opportunities for the top contenders.
